Derived from the Julian calendar formulated by Julius Caesar in 45 BC, the Orthodox calendar currently runs 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar. The liturgical Orthodox calendar determines distinct dates for Easter and other religious holidays, hinging upon its structure. This calendar represents an integral component of the religious traditions and cultural heritage affiliated with Eastern Orthodox churches.

In contrast to the widely adopted Gregorian calendar introduced as a reform by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, the Orthodox churches did not implement its usage. This deviation results in the Orthodox church persevering with the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar encompasses a leap year rule formulated to eliminate the accumulated discrepancies present within the Julian calendar, while the Orthodox church adheres strictly to the Julian calendar.

Notably, the Orthodox calendar showcases identical month names to those used within the Julian calendar: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December. However, Easter is celebrated on different dates within the Orthodox calendar. Recognized as the paramount religious holiday within Christianity, Orthodox Easter consistently falls on the Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. This contrasts with Western Easter celebrations that always occur on the Sunday following the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox.
